Photo collages are so popular nowadays. Yet, many don’t know how to make their own. I’ve created this very simple one from which you can learn how to create and use a clipping mask.

The easiest way to learn is to do. So, once you’ve figured out how how these clipping masks on the various layers work, you’ll quickly realize how simple it is. You’ll be creating your own in no time!

  1. This file was created using and intended for use in Photoshop CS 6.
  2. The file contains 6 layers specifically intended for clipping masks. For a quick tutorial on clipping masks, click here.
  3. I used Calendus Plus and Angelina fonts for the name and year, two great fonts!

How to use the clipping mask

Once you’ve placed your image into the PSD file, drag your image to a layer just above the clipping mask layer you want the image inside of. Then, right click on the image layer and choose “Create Clipping Mask“. It’s that easy.

Did you choose the wrong clipping layer? Not a problem. Right click the image layer again and choose “Release Clipping Mask”. Then, drag your image above another clipping layer.

I named my clipping mask layers according to their location on the collage grid. For example, row4, col3 layer is the bottom right photo of the collage. Once inside the clipping mask, you can resize your image with the free transform tool to fit as you need it.

I hope this helps and that you start creating your own collages soon using clipping masks like a pro!

Happy collaging!

This is what your file will look like when you open it in Photoshop. Each of the blue boxes (and purple) are the clipping areas for your images.
