Building "Health Slack" through smart design. Discover how we re-architected Credit Human’s sprawling employee benefits and wellness data into a high-speed, interactive digital engine that simplifies complex insurance lingo and drives employee engagement.
Engineering "Health Slack" Through Digital Utility
The Challenge
Credit Human is a major San Antonio-based federal credit union. Guided by a mission of financial health, they recognize that "health slack"—the resilience built through physical and mental wellbeing—is just as critical to their team’s success as financial slack is to their members. The Information Density Barrier: The HR and Employee Activity Committee (EAC) at Credit Human managed a vast repository of vital information—from medical lingo and benefit tiers to local fitness resources. However, this data was trapped in traditional, dense formats that were difficult to navigate: The "Scrolling" Fatigue: Employees were overwhelmed by long documents, leading to low engagement with wellness perks. Complex Terminology: Benefits lingo (Deductibles, Coinsurance, POPs) created a high cognitive load for new hires. Static Resources: Information about local gyms and health apps felt like a "list" rather than an interactive guide.
The Strategy
The "Jump Link" Architecture: We applied William Lidwell’s principle of Wayfinding to move from a static document to a Digital Benefits Engine. The strategy was to treat the internal employee documents with the same UX rigor as a customer-facing app. We prioritized "Cognitive Ease" by breaking down complex insurance terms and creating an interactive, non-linear reading experience.

Complex Data Organization (Benefits & Local Directories)
Print-to-Digital Integrated Design
The Solution
Interactive Wellbeing Tools: We developed a suite of digital and printable HR products designed for immediate utility and high-retention. Digital Benefit Coverage Guide: We re-engineered the traditional benefits booklet into an interactive PDF. We integrated a "Jump Link" navigation system and an "At-A-Glance" section, allowing employees to skip the "scrolling fatigue" and find specific eligibility data in two clicks. The Wellbeing Resource Hub: I designed a comprehensive 1703 Broadway Wellness Guide. This featured interactive tables of local gyms, yoga studios, and rock-climbing centers, complete with "Point of Contact" data and cost indicators ($ to $$$). Simplified "Benefits Lingo": We created a dedicated visual glossary for common medical terms. By using clear typography and structured layouts, we turned "confusing" insurance concepts into accessible knowledge. Omnichannel Communication: To ensure these tools were used, we created high-impact flyers and wellness "checklists" that included direct links to the deep-dive PDF resources, bridging the gap between physical office spaces and digital assets.
The Result
"We've Never Been So Organized": By moving from "copy-paste" documents to designed digital tools, Credit Human’s HR team saw a significant decrease in "basic info" inquiries. The EAC successfully put the "Activity" back in their committee by providing employees with a frictionless roadmap to health. The project provided a professional "handshake" between the organization and its employees, reinforcing Credit Human’s commitment to building a resilient, stress-free workforce.
